Claudia Roden is a cookery writer and cultural anthropologist and best known as the author of Middle Eastern cookbooks.
Claudia was born and brought up in Cairo, but attended school in Paris and London. She was also Egypt’s national backstroke swimming champion at the age of 15.
Besides her numerous cookery volumes, Roden has also worked as a food writer and a cooking show presenter for the BBC.
She is co-chair with Paul Levy of the Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the School of Oriental and African Studies.
Claudia is world-renowned for authoring classic cookbooks, such as Arabesque and The Book of Jewish Food. She draws upon her Jewish heritage and extensive travelling to create comprehensive guides to some of the world’s greatest cuisines.
The likes of Yotam Ottolenghi, Ruth Rogers and Russell Norman have all expressed great praise for Claudia Roden’s food writing.
Her book The Food of Italy is an authoritative and approachable guide to one of the world’s best-loved cuisines.
In 1999 the Prince Claus Fund honoured Claudia Roden with a Prince Claus Award.
She is a Patron of London-based HIV charity The Food Chain.
